The Stage

John Byrne’s funny and poignant Slab Boys trilogy paints a vivid picture of the tough, rebellious, working-class culture of 1950s industrial Scotland. Following the hugely-popular production of The Slab Boys in 2015, the Citizens Theatre presents the next instalment in the era-defining trilogy. John returns to design the new production, directed by Caroline Paterson.

Strutting adolescent double act Phil and Spanky have broken free of the confines of the A. F. Stobo & Co. Carpet Factory in Paisley and are off to the annual staff dance. Phil may have lost his job and been rejected by the Art School but he can still dream of a life beyond the slab room.

Cuttin’ A Rug picks up a few hours on from when we left the boys in the slab room, with the unattainable Lucille arriving at the dance with the university-bound Alan, and wee Hector celebrating his recent promotion. It may be after clocking off time, but gaffer Willie Rennie is still watching the boys’ every move.

The cast includes well-known faces from much-lovd Scottish comedies and drama including Barbara Rafferty, Sean Scanlan, Scott Fletcher (River City, Gary: Tank Commander), Ryan Fletcher (River City) and Paul-James Corrigan (Gary: Tank Commander).

 * Ticket prices include a contribution to the Theatres Development Fund.  An 80p handling charge will be added if you ask us to post your tickets.
