ANNUAL REVIEW 2016/17

ANNUAL REVIEW 2016/17

We are pleased to present the Annual Review 2016/17 for the Festival City Theatres Trust

2016/17 was another strong year for the Trust with an exciting programme of work presented on our stages which produced a substantial increase in both attendance and income.

Maintaining our prominence for two of the leading theatres in the country – the opulent King’s Theatre and the grand Festival Theatre, we hosted the exclusive Scottish performances for over a quarter of the shows in our programme. We hosted some of the major productions in the Edinburgh International Festival and our theatres were important venues for another nine of Edinburgh’s other Festivals.

We achieved our most successful ever Christmas season – the King’s panto is now one of the top three grossing pantomimes in the UK and the audience for Scottish Ballet’s Hansel and Gretel filled the Festival Theatre throughout December. We were proud to extend our pioneering work for people living with dementia by presenting the UK’s first dementia-friendly opera, in collaboration with Scottish Opera, and the first dementia-friendly performance in Scotland of a major touring musical.

With Mary Poppins last spring, we began what we hope will be an enduring partnership with Cameron Mackintosh bringing his hit musicals to the Festival Theatre for many years to come.  Our valuable membership of the Touring Consortium and our partnership with the National Theatre brought quality drama to our stages and as members of Dance Consortium we were able to bring stunning dance companies from across the globe to Edinburgh.

We strengthened our commitment to nurturing young talent with an extensive programme of work with young people including showcases of young disabled artists and youth dance and the establishment of the Attic Collective, a Theatre Rep Company for emerging artists aged 18-26.

We hope you’ll enjoy reading about our experiences in this year’s review.
